If you need to make a Ghost image of your drive or need to restore a Ghost image to your drive, you will have to boot up the computer with a copy of Symantec Recovery Disk.
The following procedure may be used for that purpose:
- 1, Download Norton ghost iso (see my post #5) 2, Download Rufus portable (my post #8) Run Rufus - Insert blank usb (select in Device) Select the NortonGhost iso in the 'boot selection' field) NOTE All existing date on the usb will be erased. Start Rufus to produce bootable usb. You should now be in Norton Ghost.
- Although Norton Ghost 15 is not a freeware software, but the result of this tutorial even for the ones that doesn’t have a product key will benefit from the system recovery ISO we will make and put on USB later, which contains many professional free tools you can use, so be patient, you won’t regret it, follow the steps and good luck.
Firstly make sure you have the following Prerequisites:
- A stationary or laptop computer running Windows 7.
- A Custom Symantec Recovery Disk ISO file ( Link ).
- A writeable DVD or bootable USB stick ( Link ).
- An external drive to write to which the Ghost image may be stored or from which it may be retrieved.
Procedure:
Select your USB drive from the left-hand pane of Windows Explorer, right-click anywhere in the right-hand pane and select 'Paste.' Windows will now copy your recovery disk to the USB key. You will now be able to use that recovery USB drive to boot. I have 2 Toshiba laptops and I create back up images for them. I have created a Bootable Norton Ghost USB and on 1 of the laptops this works fine. However on my 2nd laptop - newer model - I cannot boot from the same USB stick so that I can either restore.
- Insert the writeable DVD in the slot or the bootable USB stick in its port.
- Creating the bootable USB -stick
1. Locate the Custom Symantec Recovery Disk ISO file in the file system, and extract its contents to a temporary folder in the file system.
2. Copy all files and folders found in the temporary folder to the USB stick.

I have a Dell XPS L501X with Windows 7 64 bit. Using Ghost 15, I can connect to my external USB hard drive to create a restore point using the GUI no problem. When I boot using the disk to restore, Ghost is unable to see the hard drive.
When I do a driver validation, I receive the following:
WAN Miniport (IKEv2)
Intel(R) Centrino(R) WiMAX 6250
Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter
Intel(R) Centrino(R) Advanced-N 6250 AGN
None of those 'appear' to be USB related. I believe this laptop is using USB 3.0, so not sure if this is a factor with the boot disk.
I have used both a Samsung external drive and a WD (both USB 2.0 I believe) with the same result.
If anyone has any familiarity with this issue, any advice or fixes would be appreciated.
